Golden One Center Explanation

DATE EXPLANATION | Since 2009, Buzzardball has been able to host its championship games at Sleep Train Arena/Golden One Center. Each of those years we have been successful in being able to secure our "Target" date. This year was the first year that it didn't happen.

I wanted to share the 'behind the curtains' information surrounding the security of our date at Golden One. First and foremost, Buzzardball is at the mercy of the Sacramento Kings and the schedule at Golden One Center. Our target date this season was March 19th. We lost that date once the NCAA Tournament agreed to play in Sacramento between March 16th-18th. On March 19th, it's an all-day affair when they remove the NCAA basketball floor and put back in the Kings floor.

I always try to shoot for a Sunday where we can play all six games. Our backup is to play during the week with the girls on one day and the boys on another. Because of the combination of the Kings home games and concerts (Carrie Underwood, Depeche Mode, Stevie Nicks, Greta Van Vleet) scheduled in March, there was nothing available for us. That's how we landed on April 3rd and 4th.

Ultimately the Buzzardball promise is that we host the Buzzardball Championships at Golden One Center. A few years ago, we had a similar situation in which we played the Championships at Sac State. While the games were fun, I knew that going forward I would never do that again. G1C is something special and I wanted that to always be in place for the teams who earned a spot.

I hope this helps. I feel really bad for the kids who won't be able to attend the championship games because of Spring Break. I will let you know that because of what happened this season, I will be working hard to make sure that we are able to secure a championship date that is closer to the end of the season. Moving forward, I will also not list any target dates due to this year's circumstances.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
